Adventure Bound is GW’s outdoor orientation program that happens the week before classes begin. This once in a lifetime experience gives you a chance to develop new friendships and ask any lasting questions you have about GW! Take part in this amazing opportunity to try something new and spend time outside before you start your college experience in a busy city. Each Adventure Bound is led by experienced student guides to help you transition to GW and college life. Plus, you will be able to move into your assigned residence hall room early!

Come play outside with us!

Make a splash in West Virginia as you rapidly get acquainted with other GW first-years and your guides. Enjoy two thrilling days traversing the upper and lower New River. Following days of ripping through class IV rapids, gather around a campfire to enjoy some s’mores and conversation with your new classmates before pitching your tent for the night. You’ll be camping on River Expeditions grounds and rapiding on the New River: the oldest river on the continent and commonly referred to as “The Grand Canyon of the East”. Check out more photos at our flickr account!

Backpacking Trips: This description applies to the next three trips below.

Backpacking is an outdoor activity that involves hiking and carrying gear on your back. Everyday you will hike from one shelter to the next and bond with fellow first-year students. Even though there is no running water, there are outhouses. There are no toilets or showers on the trail. We’ll teach you backcountry practices, you’ll get to sleep under the stars, and experience beautiful nature without any distractions.

*We do not recommend any trip if you have had a recent injury or serious illness. Keep in mind: You will experience these trips in new environments, different climates, and various elevation changes. If you have any concerns or questions please contact Bridgette Behling at [email protected]
