What is a low ropes challenge course?

A low ropes challenge course is a combination of mental and low-intensity physical challenges, also called elements, meant to develop personal leadership and teambuilding skills. Low ropes elements take place on or a few feet above the ground. Because our course is designed to challenge teams to problem solve and increase their capacity to work well together, our elements are not the same as you might find on a High Ropes or Adventure Ropes course. We do not offer activities such as zip-lining, climbing towers, etc.

How many people can we have on the course at one time?

To guarantee safety, as well as adequate ability to complete challenges, we require a minimum of 8 people to host a SUMMIT session on our outdoor course. We have accommodated large groups in the past, but if you anticipate bringing a group of 45 or more participants, please contact us at [email protected] to discuss your session options as it may take longer to secure facilitator availability. We strive to achieve a facilitator-to-participant ratio of 1:15 or less.

How long is a session?

Sessions typically last 2 hours; however, we are happy to work with your group if you would like to schedule a session longer than 2 hours. Please check our Rates and Pricing table for additional fees incurred for sessions longer than two hours. Sessions under 1.5 hours are not recommended.

What are the SUMMIT Course’s hours of operation?

SUMMIT typically schedules our 2-hour sessions between 10am-4pm, but we are flexible! If you have a specific request outside of these hours, please indicate so on your Session Request Form and we will do our best to accommodate you. All SUMMIT sessions are scheduled based off of the availability of our student facilitators.

What if I have already done a challenge course?

You are never too experienced to benefit from a challenge course! The previous experience that you and/or other group members may bring to your session is only one aspect of your group's dynamic, and every single session on the SUMMIT course is unique depending on the participants, facilitators, and elements used. There are always new challenges to overcome and ways to improve your group's dynamics, cohesiveness, and leadership skills.

Can I bring my organization for more than 1 session?

Absolutely! After an initial session, bringing your group back for a follow up session(s) is a great way to reach that next level. Follow up sessions can also be used to work on specific group issues as they arise throughout the year in your organization or as a way to help bring closure at the end of the year.

Can I request a specific facilitator?

Yes! If you already have a specific facilitator in mind that you would like to work with, please indicate this on your online reservation form. We will do our best to accommodate your requests, but cannot guarantee their availability.

 What about inclement weather?

No problem! We usually book a rain space and have a set of indoor elements that are just as effective for teambuilding as our outdoor elements. For groups of 45 or more people, there is limited indoor space. If you anticipate bringing a group of 45 or more, please contact us at [email protected] to discuss your session.

What is the cost?

For all GW students, student organizations, and academic courses, use of the course is FREE! For all other GW departments/offices and non-GW affiliated groups, please refer to our rates & pricing table.

How far in advance do I need to schedule a session?

As far in advance as possible! SUMMIT operates on a first come, first serve basis. The sooner you complete the online reservation form the better able we are to accommodate your group on your preferred date. Please note that all of our SUMMIT sessions are scheduled on a case-by-case basis. The more notice you give us, the more likely we are able to accommodate your request. Also, keep in mind that larger groups (over 45) require more time to coordinate.

Does SUMMIT offer off-site sessions?

SUMMIT has a set of industry-standard, portable activities that can be used at any location. If you would like to schedule an off-site session at the Foggy Bottom Campus, please contact us at [email protected]. For off-site sessions not located on the Foggy Bottom Campus, please contact us for further information as certain travel restrictions may apply.

What if I need to cancel my session?

Please refer to our cancellation policy.

Where is the SUMMIT Course located?

Do I need to be a student or faculty member to participate in SUMMIT?

From athletic teams and professional organizations to academic classes, internship programs and youth groups, any group is welcome.
